How to Water Indoor Plants: A Simple Guide
Wondering when to water your indoor plants? The easiest way is to check the soil first. Different plants dry out at different speeds, so a fixed watering schedule may not suit them all.
1. Check the soil
Gently press your finger about 2–3 cm into the soil. For many common indoor plants, you can water when this top layer feels dry. If it still feels damp, check again in a day or two.
2. Water thoroughly
Pour water slowly over the soil until a little drains from the bottom of the pot. This helps moisture reach the roots. Afterward, empty any water left in the saucer so the pot does not sit in it.
3. Notice what changes
A plant in a bright, warm spot may dry out faster than one in a cooler corner. Pot size and the type of potting mix also make a difference. Check the soil more often when your plant’s surroundings change.
What about succulents and cacti?
Let their potting mix dry out more completely between waterings. They generally need less frequent watering than leafy indoor plants.
A simple reminder: Check the soil, water when your plant needs it, and make sure excess water can drain away.
