How to Care for Rex Begonia in Malaysia

The Green Journal · Plant Care

Our practical guide to beautiful foliage, balanced watering and gentle light.

Rex Begonias are grown for their striking leaves. From metallic silver and deep green to pink and burgundy, their patterns bring colour and texture to a plant collection without relying on flowers.

At Succulent Shop, our approach is simple: bright, indirect light, a lightly moist growing medium and good airflow. We also watch for signs that the plant is receiving too much sun.

Here is how to apply those principles at home.

01 Bright, indirect light
02 Lightly moist medium
03 Gentle air circulation

01 / Choose bright, indirect light

Place your Rex Begonia somewhere bright, sheltered from harsh direct sunlight.

A window with filtered light can be a good starting point. Outdoors, choose a shaded, sheltered position that still receives plenty of ambient light.

Avoid treating a dark corner as a shaded growing spot. Your plant needs enough light to support healthy growth and show its leaf colours.

From our experience at Succulent Shop

We keep our Rex Begonias in bright, indirect light. If a position becomes too sunny and the foliage starts to scorch, we move the plant somewhere with gentler light.

Check how sunlight changes throughout the day. A spot that is comfortable in the morning may receive much stronger afternoon sun.

02 / Keep the medium lightly moist

Rex Begonias appreciate moisture, but their roots should not stay in soggy planting medium.

Allow the upper layer to dry slightly before watering again. Check the medium and the weight of the pot rather than following a fixed daily or weekly schedule.

When watering is needed, water the medium thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Empty water left in the saucer or decorative outer pot.

What we mean by “keep it moist”

At our shop, maintaining moisture is part of our care routine. For home growers, that means avoiding both prolonged saturation and a completely dried-out root ball.

If the medium is still wet, adding more water is unlikely to help.

03 / Avoid stuffy, stagnant conditions

One of our main reminders is not to keep Rex Begonias in an overly enclosed, stagnant spot.

They appreciate humid air, but humidity needs to be balanced with gentle air circulation. Avoid crowding plants so tightly that their foliage stays damp with little airflow.

Keep them away from strong air-conditioning drafts or a fan blowing directly at the leaves.

Water the medium, not the foliage

Direct water onto the planting medium rather than repeatedly showering the leaves or crown.

Routine misting is not necessary for this plant. Keeping foliage relatively dry and allowing air to circulate helps reduce disease problems.

Humid air does not mean constantly wet leaves. Balance moisture around your plant with gentle airflow.

04 / What if the leaves become sunburnt?

Strong sunlight can damage Rex Begonia foliage. However, a brown patch or crispy edge alone does not confirm sunburn—watering problems and dry air can also affect leaves.

If damage develops after exposure to strong sun, move the plant to bright, filtered light and monitor the new growth.

From our experience at Succulent Shop

When a position is too sunny, our first step is to move the plant somewhere with less direct sun.

The aim is a gentler bright spot, rather than a dark location. Already scorched tissue will not return to its original appearance, so look for healthier new growth after adjusting the conditions.

05 / Choose a medium and pot that drain well

Use a light, well-drained potting mix that retains some moisture without remaining heavy and saturated.

Choose a pot with drainage holes. Rex Begonias have spreading rhizomes, so a relatively shallow, wide container can suit their growth.

Avoid moving a small plant into a much larger pot. Extra medium can remain wet for longer than expected.

If your pot stays wet for many days, review the mix, drainage, location and watering frequency.

06 / Read common problems carefully

Yellowing leaves

Check moisture and light before assuming the plant needs fertiliser. Both excessive watering and insufficient watering can contribute to yellowing, as can low light.

Brown, crispy edges

Review direct sunlight, dry air and whether the root ball has dried too much. Avoid responding by repeatedly soaking medium that is already wet.

Soft leaves or a soft base

Check for prolonged wetness and possible rot. Pause automatic watering and inspect the plant’s condition.

White powdery patches or spreading spots

These may indicate disease rather than a watering shortage. Separate the affected plant from nearby plants, avoid wetting its foliage and seek help identifying the problem.

Different problems can look similar. A clear photo of the whole plant, affected leaves and planting medium is more useful than judging one leaf alone.

07 / Keep everyday care gentle

Remove dead leaves and fallen debris so they do not collect around the plant.

During active growth, feed with a suitable houseplant fertiliser according to its label. Avoid adding extra fertiliser as a quick treatment for unexplained damage.

Handle leaves carefully when moving or checking the plant. Their appearance is the main attraction, and a little care helps keep them looking their best.

Quick care summary

Rex Begonia care at a glance
Care requirement What to do

Planting medium Light, moisture-retentive and well-drained.
Humidity and airflow Humid air with gentle circulation; avoid stagnant, damp conditions.
Leaf care Water the medium and avoid routinely wetting the leaves or crown.
Sun damage Move to gentler filtered light and monitor new growth.
Yellow or damaged leaves Check conditions before assuming a single cause.

Our most useful tip: balance moisture, light and air

At Succulent Shop, we focus on keeping Rex Begonias in bright, indirect light, maintaining suitable moisture and avoiding stuffy conditions.

These needs work together. More water cannot correct excessive sun, and more humidity cannot fix saturated roots.

Observe the plant and its surroundings, then adjust the condition that needs attention.
